DIY Boho Crossbody Bag from Old Clothes from Scratch

Model wearing the handmade boho crossbody bag with fringe, made from recycled clothing

I love sewing bags that tell a story—and this one? It used to be a pair of old trousers, a floral skirt, and a soft cotton shirt. Now it’s a boho crossbody bag with patchwork vibes, long fringes, and a roomy inside pocket. I lined it, added a zipper pocket, and made it all from recycled fabrics I already had at home.

If you love boho bag sewing patterns, working with what you have, and adding a handmade touch to your wardrobe, follow along and make your own!

♻️ Why I Love This Project

Boho crossbody bag handmade from recycled pants, shirt, and skirt with patchwork and fringe details

This fringe bag is 100% refashioned. I reused clothing that was sitting at the back of my closet and gave it a new life. Each fabric had a lovely texture or color that worked perfectly for a patchwork bag. Sustainable, fun, and super boho!

Step by Step How to Sew Boho Crossbody Bag

 Prepare and Press

Before you even touch your sewing machine, iron everything. Pressing fabrics before cutting makes your pieces more accurate and your final result so much neater. I always use a steam iron and keep my ironing board clean and padded. Trust me—this step makes a difference!

Prepare the Lining

A neat lining makes your bag look professional. I cut two pieces of lining fabric according to my bag pattern—one for the front and one for the back.

 Make the Zipper Pocket

Pockets are easiest to add before assembling the bag:

Sewing a zippered inner pocket into the lining of the boho crossbody bag

  •     Cut two small rectangles of fabric.
  •     Sew them to each end of the zipper.
  •     Use the zipper length to decide the pocket width.
  •     Add 2 cm (0.8 in) seam allowance all around.
  •     Cut a large rectangle, sew right sides together (leaving a small gap).
  •     Turn it right side out, press, and stitch the gap closed.

Now attach the pocket zipper to the lining.

Then pin and sew the pocket to one piece of the lining—just the sides and bottom. That’s it! Inner zipper pocket: done ✅

Sew the Lining Together

Pin the two lining pieces right sides together. Sew all around but leave a small gap. This will help when turning the bag later. Set it aside.

Cut Your Main Fabric Pieces

I used my old trousers, skirt, and shirt here. Choose fabrics with texture and boho colors—think earthy tones, florals, and natural textures. Cut all your patchwork pieces according to the shape you want for your bag.

Sew the Patchwork Bag Front & Back

Now follow your patchwork layout. Sew each piece together, pressing the seams as you go. You’ll end up with a front and back for your patchwork boho bag

Decorate the Seams (Optional)

Here comes the fun part: decoration!

I used colorful yarn to hide my patchwork seams using a zigzag stitch. Two methods:

  •     Bobbin method: Wind yarn onto the bobbin, sew zigzag on the wrong side.
  •     Topstitch method: Pin yarn to the right side and zigzag over it.

Use a zigzag presser foot and always test your stitch first!

Ready !

Make Fringes

Working from the wrong side of the fabric:

Cutting and securing fabric fringes for boho-style bag decoration

  •     Use a ruler to mark fringe lines, evenly spaced.
  •     Cut up each line, leaving 2 cm (0.8 in) at the top.
  •     Secure the fringes with a zigzag stitch, twisting each one as you go.

Don’t forget to backstitch at the start and end!

Sew Fringes to the Bag

Pin your fringe strip to the bottom edge of the front bag piece. Sew it on firmly. I also made a small tassel fringe and attached it to the flap for extra boho charm. 🌾

Sew Front and Back Together

Now place the front and back of the bag right sides together. Pin, sew all around, and press. The outer shell of your bag is ready!

Make the Crossbody Handle

Making and turning the fabric handle for the DIY boho bag using a safety pin
  •     Use a ruler to draw long fabric strips.
  •     Cut them with seam allowance included.
  •     Sew them lengthwise (right sides together), forming a tube.
  •     Use a safety pin to turn the tube right side out.
  •     Press the handle flat.
  •

Attach the Handle

Attaching the fabric handle securely to the inside of the bag

Pin each end of the strap to the inside top edges of the bag. Make sure they’re even and symmetrical. Sew them securely to the main fabric.

Attach the Lining to the Bag

  • With your main bag right side out and lining wrong side out, insert the bag into the lining (right sides together).

  •  Pin along the top edge and sew, leaving a small gap.

  •     Sew the gap closed.
  •     Finally, topstitch around the edge for a clean finish.

Let’s get into it!

My Favorite Waffle Dessert Recipe

Here’s exactly how I make these delicious waffles at home. It’s a no-fuss, beginner-friendly recipe that’s hard to mess up. And it’s super flexible if you need to adjust quantities.

 Ingredients:

3 cups of flour

4 eggs (separate yolks and whites)

1/4 teaspoon of salt

1/2 cup of sugar

1 and 3/4 cups of sparkling water (or regular still water/milk if preferred)

1/2 cup of oil (sunflower or light vegetable oil works well)

1 teaspoon of baking powder

Cooking Tip:

This recipe uses a standard 250 ml glass as a measuring cup. If your glass is smaller or larger, remember to adjust other ingredients proportionally (especially eggs, salt, and baking powder). It’s a handy way to keep the recipe balanced!

Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Waffle Dessert

1. Separate the Eggs

Crack your eggs and separate the yolks from the whites into two bowls. Set the yolks aside and beat the whites with a pinch of salt until stiff peaks form. This gives the batter that light, airy texture.

Step-by-step waffle making process showing key ingredients

2. Mix the Wet Ingredients
In the bowl with the yolks, add the sugar and mix until smooth.

Then pour in the oil and sparkling water (or milk), and stir to combine.

The sparkling water gives the waffles a soft and fluffy bite—almost like a dessert cloud!

3. Combine the Dry Ingredients

In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, and a pinch of salt

. Gradually add this dry mix into the wet mixture, stirring gently until everything is well incorporated.

Mixing sparkling water waffle batter in a bowl

4. Fold in the Egg Whites
Gently fold the whipped egg whites into the batter by hand using a spatula or spoon. Take your time and don’t overmix—you want to keep as much of that airy volume as possible.

Beaten egg whites folded gently into waffle batter

5. Let the Batter Rest
Let the batter sit for about 10 to 20 minutes. This helps the flour fully absorb the liquids and makes for even fluffier waffles.

6. Bake or Fry

If you have a waffle iron, heat it up and lightly grease it. Pour in a ladle of batter and cook until golden brown and crisp.

No waffle iron? No worries! You can fry the batter like pancakes on a nonstick pan. They come out soft and golden—perfect for layering with fruit or whipped cream.

Turn Them into a Dessert Dream

Now that you’ve got your warm waffles, let’s turn them into a true dessert masterpiece:

🧁 Topping Ideas:

  •  Nutella or Chocolate Spread: For a rich, chocolaty flavor.

  • Whipped CreamAdds lightness and creaminess.

  • Fresh Fruits: Strawberries, bananas, or berries for freshness.

  •  Ice CreamVanilla or your favorite flavor for indulgence.

  •  Syrups: Maple, caramel, or chocolate syrup for drizzling.

You can make your waffles look (and taste!) like something straight out of a fancy cafe. Kids love building their own, and adults… well, we don’t say no to waffle bars either

 Fun Fact:

Did you know the word “waffle” comes from the Dutch word wafel, and waffles date back to the 13th century in Europe? They were originally baked over open fires between two hot irons and eaten more like crispy bread. Now, we dress them up in delicious layers of cream, chocolate, and fruit. What a tasty evolution!

ready diy mirror frame from paper marche

Have you ever looked at a plain mirror and thought: this could use a little magic? ✨ If yes, you’re in the right place. Today, I’m showing you how to make a stunning DIY mirror frame using nothing more than cardboard, old paper scraps, and your imagination.

But hold on—this isn’t your average kids’ art project. We’re diving into a grown-up version of papier mâché (aka paper mache) to create a custom cardboard mirror frame that looks like home décor straight out of Anthropologie – minus the price tag.

Whether you’re new to crafts or already hoarding craft glue like it’s gold, this guide is for you. And yes – I’m sharing a free PDF pattern for leaves you can use to decorate your mirror. 🍃

Let’s get creative, shall we?

before and after diy mirror frame

What You’ll Need to Make a DIY Mirror Frame

Here’s a quick breakdown of everything you’ll need. Most of these things are probably already lying around your home:

Tools and materials needed for diy mirror frame

Item Why You Need It
Mirror (without frame) The star of the show – thrifted or old mirrors work best.
Cardboard Used to create the shape of your mirror frame. Think cereal boxes or shipping boxes.
Old paper or paper towel This is your main material for paper mache.
PVA glue (or school glue) To make your papier mâché mix. Also called white glue or wood glue.
Water To thin the glue and activate the paper mache magic.
Scissors For cutting cardboard and paper shapes.
Paint (acrylic or spray) To decorate your mirror once the frame is dry.
Brush or sponge To apply glue and paint.
Free leaf template (PDF) Optional, but perfect for adding pretty details to your frame.

 Mirror Before: Plain, Boring, Forgotten

You know those sad little mirrors from the back of the closet or a discount store? The ones with zero personality? That’s what I started with.

My goal: transform it into something elegant and earthy – a statement piece with a handmade soul.

How to Make Cardboard Mirrir Frame

Add Decorative Elements (Like Leaves!)

Adding decorative elements for diy mirror frame

Now for the fun part – decorating! I originally planned to add roses 🌹, but ended up loving the look of layered leaves instead. 🍂
You can:
Draw your own leaves and cut them from cardboard or thick paper
Or download my [Free PDF Leaf Template] to print and trace (link to PDF)
Glue the leaves around the frame while everything is still damp, shaping them slightly for a 3D look.

How to Do Papier Mâché for a Mirror Frame (Step-by-Step)

Creating your cardboard mirror frame with paper mache is easier than it sounds. Here's exactly what to do:

Prepare Your Papier Mâché Paste

You don’t need anything fancy. Just mix:

making glue for diy mirror frame

  •     1 part PVA glue (or Elmer’s)
  •     1 part water

That’s it! Stir it up, and you’ve got your papier mâché paste.

Soak Your Paper

Tear (don’t cut) your paper into strips or small shapes or soak whole paper in glue . This helps them blend better when applied.

You can use:

materials for creating papier mache

  •     Old book pages 📖
  •     Napkins
  •     Paper towel
  •     Newspaper
  •     Tissue paper

Apply the Papier Mâché

Here’s where the fun begins:

Adding papier mache on diy mirror frame

  •     Dip each piece of paper into the glue-water mixture, or brush glue onto your cardboard.
  •     Layer the paper over the frame, pressing it down gently.
  •     Use your fingers, a brush, or sponge to smooth it out.
  •     Keep layering – about 2 to 3 layers is perfect.

How Long Does Papier Mâché Take to Dry?

Drying diy mirror frame

Usually:

12 to 24 hours for one layer in normal indoor temps.

Use a fan to speed up drying.

Make sure it’s fully dry before painting, or it might warp or mold.

 Painting & Finishing Touches

Once your frame is dry, it’s time to paint. Here’s what I did:

Painted the frame dark graphite gray 🎨

painting grey with gold accentdiy mirror frame

Dry brushed a little gold paint on the leaf edges for depth and shine

The result? A magical gray-gold combo that looks both modern and organic. Seriously – gray + gold = chef’s kiss. 💋

You could also try:

Seal it with clear varnish for extra protection (optional but recommended).

 Mirror After: Ta-Da!

You can hang it in:

  •     Entryways
  •     Bathrooms
  •     Bedrooms
  •     Or even gift it to someone special

It’s also a fantastic rainy-day project to do with older kids or teens.
